Cody Carter handles a diverse range of intellectual property matters, from the initial drafting of patents to the enforcement of IP rights in court. With a background in mechanical engineering and materials science, he works closely with inventors across mechanical and electromechanical fields. Cody has helped clients secure patent protection for innovations in electric vehicle charging, resistive braking systems, intraluminal medical devices, oil and gas equipment, construction control systems, and agricultural equipment, among other areas.

Drawing on his judicial experience, Cody passionately advocates for his clients’ intellectual property rights. Whether representing a patent holder or defending against a patent claim, he works collaboratively to achieve resolutions that maximize his clients' rights under the law.

Cody's legal background includes serving as a law clerk to Chief Judge J. Rodney Gilstrap in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, as a judicial intern to Judge Alan D. Albright in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas, and for Judge Jaclanel McFarland in the Harris County 133rd Civil District Court. In these roles, he assisted in trial preparations, claim construction hearings, motion reviews, and legal research for the court. Prior to joining Winstead, Cody was an associate at Foley & Lardner LLP, where he enjoyed working closely with mentors and colleagues to learn the art of patent drafting before transitioning to full-time patent litigation.

While at Baylor Law, Cody also gained hands-on experience at the Intellectual Property Law Clinic, assisting clients with patent and trademark matters.

Search Tips:

You may use the wildcard symbol (*) as a root expander.  A search for "anti*" will find not only "anti", but also "anti-trust", "antique", etc.

Entering two terms together in a search field will behave as though an "OR" is being used.  For example, entering "Antique Motorcars" as a Client Name search will find results with either word in the Client Name.

Operators

AND and OR may be used in a search.  Note: they must be capitalized, e.g., "Project AND Finance."

The + and - sign operators may be used.  The + sign indicates that the term immediately following is required, while the - sign indicates to omit results that contain that term. E.g., "+real -estate" says results must have "real" but not "estate".

To perform an exact phrase search, surround your search phrase with quotation marks.  For example, "Project Finance".

Searches are not case sensitive.
